Though
Seaside Park was established more than 130 years ago, the ocean front still
looks much as it did back at the turn of the century. With the opening of
a rail line from Philadelphia to the Park in 1881, floods of well-to-do city
folk spent their summers along the two miles of sparking beaches. Many of
the ocean front "cottages" built by the wealthy summer residents still exist.
Large
motels were built along the ocean front during the Park's gilded age. The
Manhasset covered an entire block and drew scores of people to the shore.
It was destroyed by fire in the 1940s.
Seaside
Park was known for its pound fisheries. Fish caught here were often
shipped to the cities of New York and Philadelphia.
